Care Designed for Children

Pediatric Neurosurgery Built Around the Whole Child

Why ABS Pediatric

Children are not simply smaller adults. Their brains, spines and nervous systems are still developing, and a condition or treatment can affect growth, movement, learning and quality of life for years to come. At ABS Pediatric, every recommendation considers the diagnosis, the child’s stage of development and what matters most to the family.

Pediatric Neurosurgery Built Around the Whole Child

Our pediatric specialists look beyond the immediate neurological problem, considering how each treatment decision may affect a child’s development, function and future.

  • Specialized expertise in infants, children and adolescents
  • Parents and caregivers included as part of the care team
  • Treatment plans designed with long-term development in mind

A Thoughtful Approach to Surgery

The Right Treatment for the Condition—and the Child

Not every pediatric neurological condition requires surgery. When surgery is appropriate, the approach is selected around the child’s diagnosis, age, development and long-term needs. Our team uses established and advanced techniques to treat the problem while protecting healthy tissue and function whenever possible.

The most advanced procedure is not automatically the right one.

The goal is to choose the safest, most effective approach for your child’s specific condition, stage of development and future.

Back on the Field—and Back to His Future

Conditions, Treatments and Common Questions

Learn more about the pediatric brain and spine conditions our specialists evaluate, along with answers to questions families frequently ask.

When should my child see a pediatric neurosurgeon?

A pediatric neurosurgical evaluation may be appropriate when imaging reveals a condition affecting the brain, spine or nervous system; symptoms suggest a neurological problem; or another physician recommends a specialist consultation. An evaluation does not necessarily mean your child will need surgery.

Does meeting with a pediatric neurosurgeon mean surgery is necessary?

No. The first priority is understanding the diagnosis and determining whether treatment is needed. Some conditions can be monitored, managed without surgery or followed over time as your child grows.

What should we bring to the first appointment?

Bring relevant imaging, radiology reports, medical records, test results, medication information and a list of your questions. Our team can let you know what records are needed before the visit.

How is pediatric neurosurgical care different from adult care?

Children’s brains, spines and nervous systems are still developing. Evaluation and treatment must account for age, growth, development and the potential long-term effects of each option.

Can we request a second opinion for our child?

Yes. Our specialists can review your child’s diagnosis, imaging and proposed treatment and help you understand whether monitoring, surgery or another approach may be appropriate.

Are minimally invasive options available for children?

In some cases. The appropriate approach depends on the diagnosis, anatomy, age and treatment goals. When possible, our specialists consider techniques designed to minimize disruption and preserve healthy anatomy.

What should we expect after surgery?

Recovery varies according to the condition and procedure. Before treatment, your care team will explain the expected hospital stay, activity restrictions, follow-up plan and anticipated return to school and other activities.

Where are pediatric neurosurgery appointments available?

Atlantic Brain and Spine offers pediatric neurosurgical consultations in Morristown and Edison, New Jersey. Appointment availability may vary by physician and condition.
