ABS Neurovascular

The right approach changes everything.

Advanced neurovascular care for brain aneurysms, AVMs, stroke and other complex cerebrovascular conditions, with expertise across open surgery and minimally invasive endovascular treatment.

01
EXPERIENCE THAT MATTERS

Experience across the full spectrum of neurovascular care.

Our neurovascular specialists bring decades of experience treating brain aneurysms, AVMs, stroke and other complex cerebrovascular conditions, with expertise spanning open surgery and minimally invasive endovascular treatment.

Why ABS

The best approach isn’t always the same. Some neurovascular conditions may be treated from inside the blood vessels, while others are better suited to open surgery, radiosurgery or a combination of approaches. Having expertise across treatment methods allows care to be built around the condition—not a single technique.

Experience across the full spectrum of neurovascular care.

Having more than one way to treat a condition matters. Our neurovascular team evaluates each case from multiple perspectives to determine the safest and most effective approach.

  • Decades of experience in complex neurovascular care
  • Expertise across open and endovascular treatment
  • Pioneers in advanced stroke and neurovascular treatment in New Jersey
02
THE RIGHT APPROACH

Not every neurovascular condition should be treated the same way.

The same diagnosis can have very different treatment options depending on its location, anatomy and risk. Our specialists consider the full range of approaches to determine the treatment—or combination of treatments—best suited to each patient.

01 · OPEN SURGERY

Microsurgery

For some aneurysms, AVMs and other vascular conditions, an open microsurgical approach may provide the most effective or durable treatment.

02 · MINIMALLY INVASIVE

Endovascular Treatment

Using catheters guided through the blood vessels, our specialists can treat many neurovascular conditions without open surgery.

03 · FOCUSED

Radiosurgery

For select AVMs and other vascular abnormalities, highly focused radiation can provide another treatment option without an incision.

04 · MULTIMODAL CARE

Combined Approaches

For complex neurovascular conditions, the best treatment may involve more than one approach, combining endovascular treatment, microsurgery or radiosurgery as part of a coordinated plan.

04
WHEN MINUTES MATTER

Advanced stroke care when time matters most.

A stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel can require immediate treatment to restore blood flow to the brain. Our neurovascular specialists have decades of experience in emergency stroke intervention, including mechanical thrombectomy for large-vessel occlusion.

Advanced stroke care when time matters most.

A history of advancing stroke treatment in New Jersey.

ABS neurovascular specialists have helped bring major advances in stroke treatment to patients across New Jersey. That history includes New Jersey’s first acute stroke intervention using mechanical thrombectomy, performed by Ronald P. Benitez, MD.

  • 24/7 emergency neurovascular expertise
  • Mechanical thrombectomy for eligible large-vessel strokes
  • Hospital-based expertise for complex cerebrovascular emergencies

ADVANCING THE FIELD

Innovation that expands what’s possible.

Advances in neurovascular care continue to create new options for conditions once considered difficult to treat. Our specialists bring emerging techniques into practice when they offer a meaningful advantage for patients.

01

MMA Embolization

A minimally invasive treatment for chronic subdural hematoma that targets the blood vessels contributing to continued bleeding and recurrence.

02

Complex Aneurysm Treatment

Flow diversion, stent-assisted coiling and other endovascular techniques have expanded treatment options for complex and wide-neck brain aneurysms.

03

Advanced Embolization

Catheter-based techniques allow specialists to reach and treat complex AVMs, fistulas and other vascular abnormalities from within the blood vessels.

04

Intraoperative Angiography

Real-time vascular imaging during surgery helps surgeons evaluate blood flow and confirm treatment results before the procedure is complete.

NEUROVASCULAR CONDITIONS

Conditions We Treat

Our neurovascular team evaluates and treats a wide range of conditions affecting the blood vessels of the brain, head and neck, and spinal cord.

What conditions does a neurovascular neurosurgeon treat?

Neurovascular neurosurgeons diagnose and treat conditions involving the blood vessels of the brain, head and neck, and spinal cord. These include brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), dural arteriovenous fistulas, carotid artery disease, moyamoya disease, stroke and other complex vascular conditions.

What is the difference between open cerebrovascular surgery and endovascular treatment?

Open cerebrovascular surgery treats a condition through a surgical opening in the skull, while endovascular procedures use small catheters guided through the blood vessels to reach the treatment area from within. Some conditions can be treated either way, while others may require one approach or a combination of both.

How do you decide which neurovascular treatment is right for me?

The best approach depends on your diagnosis, anatomy, symptoms, overall health and the risks and benefits of each option. Because our specialists have expertise in both open cerebrovascular and endovascular techniques, we can evaluate the full range of appropriate treatments rather than approaching every case with a single technique.

Do all brain aneurysms and AVMs need treatment?

No. Some aneurysms, AVMs and other vascular abnormalities may be safely monitored, while others have characteristics that make treatment advisable. Our specialists evaluate factors such as size, location, symptoms, prior bleeding and individual risk to help determine whether observation or treatment is appropriate.

Can you provide a second opinion for a complex neurovascular condition?

Yes. Second opinions can be especially valuable when you have been given different treatment recommendations, have been told a condition is difficult to treat, or want to understand whether additional surgical or endovascular options are available. Our team can review your diagnosis, imaging and prior recommendations.

What should I bring to my neurovascular appointment?

Bring any relevant MRI, MRA, CT, CTA or angiogram images and reports, along with your medication list and records related to your diagnosis or previous treatment. Having the actual imaging—not just the written report—can help our specialists evaluate your condition and discuss your options.

When is a neurovascular condition an emergency?

Call 911 for sudden symptoms such as an extremely severe headache, new weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking, facial drooping, sudden vision changes, loss of balance or consciousness. These can be signs of a stroke, brain hemorrhage or another neurological emergency and require immediate evaluation.

Does Atlantic Brain & Spine treat patients who have already had neurovascular surgery or endovascular treatment?

Yes. Our specialists evaluate patients with previously treated neurovascular conditions, including those who need ongoing surveillance, additional treatment or assessment of a recurrent or residual condition.
