01
A Treatment Plan Built Around You

Your spine. Your goals. The right approach.

Why ABS Spine

Spine surgery isn’t one-size-fits-all. The same diagnosis can require very different treatment strategies depending on your symptoms, imaging, anatomy, age and goals. At ABS Spine, our neurosurgical and orthopedic spine specialists start by determining what is causing your symptoms, whether surgery is appropriate and which procedure makes the most sense for you. When surgery is the right choice, our goal is to address the problem effectively while preserving healthy anatomy and motion whenever possible.

Your spine. Your goals. The right approach.

Our surgeons consider not only whether to operate, but how—looking for opportunities to minimize disruption and preserve healthy anatomy and motion whenever possible.

  • The right procedure for your diagnosis
  • The least disruptive approach when appropriate
  • Motion preserved whenever possible

04

Focus on Long-Term Function

Our goal extends beyond addressing the immediate problem. We consider motion, stability and long-term function when planning your surgery.

Molly Mack recovering after emergency complex cervical spine surgery
Real Patient · Emergency Complex Spine Surgery

Back on her feet. Focused on the future.

After a devastating car accident, 18-year-old soccer captain Molly Mack suffered two broken cervical vertebrae and a serious spinal cord injury that threatened her ability to walk. Kimberly Ashayeri, MD, performed an emergency cervical laminectomy and C3–C6 fusion to relieve pressure on Molly’s spinal cord and stabilize her neck. Through surgery, rehabilitation and extraordinary determination, Molly progressed from assisted steps to walking independently—and even dribbling a soccer ball again.

SPINE CONDITIONS & DIAGNOSES

Conditions we treat

What conditions does the Atlantic Brain and Spine Spine Center treat?

The Spine Center treats the full range of cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine conditions, including herniated discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica, spondylolisthesis, degenerative disc disease, scoliosis, kyphosis, myelopathy, cervical and lumbar radiculopathy, facet joint syndrome, pediatric pars fractures (spondylolysis), and spinal tumors. Care begins with an accurate diagnosis by a spine specialist before any treatment is recommended.

Do I need surgery for my back or neck pain?

Not always. Surgery is not the number one priority at Atlantic Brain and Spine, you are. Many spine conditions improve with non-surgical care such as physical therapy, physiatry, pain management, and targeted injections. Surgery is recommended only when it is genuinely the best option, and every case is evaluated individually to find the least invasive effective treatment.

What is the ABS spine board and how does it help my care?

The spine board is a weekly meeting where fellowship-trained, board-certified neurosurgical and orthopedic spine specialists review complex cases together. This gives patients a built-in second and third opinion before major treatment decisions are made, resulting in more precise diagnoses, greater confidence in the plan, and improved safety and surgical planning.

What is the difference between a neurosurgeon and an orthopedic spine surgeon?

Both are highly trained spine surgeons. Neurosurgeons focus on the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system, while orthopedic spine surgeons focus on the musculoskeletal system with fellowship training in spine. At the ABS Spine Center, both work together on the same spine board, so patients benefit from both perspectives on every complex case.

What advanced spine surgery options does the Spine Center offer?

The Spine Center offers minimally invasive spine surgery, robotic-assisted spine surgery using advanced navigation, motion-preserving procedures such as artificial disc replacement, and complex spine surgery for deformity, revision, and spinal tumors. The right approach is selected based on your specific diagnosis and goals.

How do I request an appointment or a second opinion at the Spine Center?

You can request an appointment or a second opinion by calling 973.993.7100 or by completing the online appointment form at atlanticbrainandspine.org. Second opinions are welcomed, and the team practices across multiple New Jersey locations including Morristown, Summit, Manalapan, Edison, and New Brunswick.
