A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner core of a spinal disc pushes through a tear in its outer layer, compressing nearby nerves. It can cause back pain, sciatica, or weakness in the arms or legs.

Most cases resolve with physical therapy and medications, but surgery may be recommended if pain persists, weakness worsens, or bladder/bowel function is affected.
