MMA Embolization: A Minimally Invasive Option for Chronic Subdural Hematoma

Middle Meningeal Artery (MMA) embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that offers a safer, lower-risk alternative to surgery for treating chronic subdural hematomas (cSDH). This approach is ideal for patients who are not candidates for open brain surgery or who face a high risk of recurrence.

What Is MMA Embolization?

MMA embolization is a catheter-based treatment that blocks the artery supplying blood to the outer layer of the brain (the dura). This helps prevent ongoing or future bleeding that contributes to the growth of chronic subdural hematomas. The procedure is performed under light sedation or local anesthesia and typically involves a short hospital stay.

How the Procedure Works

Using real-time imaging, a thin catheter is inserted through a small incision in the wrist or groin and guided to the middle meningeal artery. Tiny particles or coils are delivered through the catheter to block blood flow, cutting off the supply to the hematoma membrane and promoting its natural resolution.

Who Is a Candidate for MMA Embolization?

This technique is often recommended for patients with:

  • Chronic subdural hematomas that may recur after surgical drainage
  • Medical conditions that make traditional brain surgery high risk
  • Minimal symptoms but radiographic evidence of cSDH

Benefits of MMA Embolization

  • Minimally invasive technique
  • Reduced risk of recurrence
  • Shorter recovery time compared to open surgery
  • Lower risk of infection and surgical complications
  • Safe for elderly and high-risk patients
