Total Resection of a Large Meningioma
Patient Profile & Diagnosis
A 30-year-old professional musician was referred to Dr. Johnson after presenting with headaches, imbalance, left-sided weakness, and mild confusion. The patient had no prior medical history or health problems. The symptoms came on rapidly, and an outpatient MRI revealed a grapefruit-sized tumor, approximately 6-7 cm, pressing on critical brain structures at the skull base. The tumor’s size and location required an exceptionally skilled surgeon to perform both deep tissue resection and superficial cosmetic reconstruction of the skull.
Surgical Approach
Dr. Johnson developed and executed a comprehensive surgical plan within days of referral. In collaboration with an ENT specialist, Dr. Johnson used advanced image-guided navigation technology to ensure precise tumor removal. The system registered the patient’s facial and scalp features to create a “GPS” map, which enhanced accuracy during deeper brain navigation.
Using fine, microscopic drills, Dr. Johnson separated the normal bone from the tumor-invaded bone, creating an isolated section of abnormal bone. This allowed access to the tumor, which was then carefully separated from the brain under a microscope. Due to the tumor’s involvement with the bone, a custom mesh reconstruction was also performed to restore the skull’s integrity, achieving a successful surgical cure.
Following surgery, the patient developed fluid accumulation beneath the skin due to the tumor’s impact on the bone. Dr. Johnson performed a second procedure to place a shunt, effectively diverting the fluid to the abdomen and ensuring an excellent cosmetic result.
Outcome
The surgery was a success, with the patient experiencing immediate neurological improvement. He was discharged two days post-op. Follow-up imaging showed the brain naturally filled the surgical cavity. Within weeks, the patient returned to his normal activities, including traveling for musical performances.
